Hackney Singers celebrated their 40 year anniversary in style on Saturday 23rd November 2013, with a 70s- themed evening of music, dance, singing and food at the Hackney Marshes Centre.
Over 100 current and former members, plus friends and family dusted off their flares and dined on a menu of prawn cocktail, cheese and pineapple, chicken curry, macaroni cheese and black forest gâteau. The evening commenced with speeches from two of Hackney Singers longest-singing members, John Ayto and Natalie Shefer who have over 50 years experience in the choir between them. Natalie ended by thanking the choir for Not holding auditions. The choir and guests viewed the premiere of a short film about the choir by Phoebe Platman, before everyone sang Happy Birthday Hackney Singers (arranged and conducted by alto Tara Creme) and Abba’s Thank You for the Music.
Singers of all ages demonstrated a remarkable level of dancing skill and enthusiasm, before a final sing-along around the piano.
Dear 1970s people
What a really lovely evening hey! Really good venue, nice starters – 70’s mains and black forest gateau – all very sophisticated. Great dancing music fantastic sound courtesy Gary and some very interesting uninhibited – er – dancing too. Georgia’s behind the scenes team were a great support act. The food organisers and indeed, those bringing it, did a great job including clearing up- thank you. Tara and Helen worked wonders with the scratch singing – I think we loved that . And what a good thing, as Natalie says, that we don’t have auditions… Her piece about how she got into the choir was really lovely and John’s summary of concerts over the years was a great reminder to those who us who have been at too many to remember. As not everyone could hear him, maybe he could be persuaded to type it up and along with Natalie’s piece we could add it to our archive.
Andy was a most attractive looking and charming compere and thanks too to Helen for putting together the photos etc on screen . Phoebe did wonders with limited footage and little knowledge that she had about the choir, in producing the video. I am assured it is not quite finished and will be further finessed so we can all see it again.
It was a treat to see so many choir members (not all recognisable ) – family / friends and old members too. And also Dan and his family coming from Lewisham which I think we all really appreciated.
Georgia – you make a wonderful Liza Minnelli. Do think seriously about leading a karaoke evening. Your enthusiasm was infectious and a big thank you for getting us there and giving us such a good time.
